I am directed by the Secretary of State for the Colonies to inform you that, subject to your being passed by the medical adviser of this Department as physically fit for service, he proposes to select you for the probationary appointment as a Nursing Sister in the Medical Department, Hong Kong with salary at the rate of $660 a year, rising to $900 with increments of $120, together with free uniform, fuel, light, and attendance.
2. The exchange value of the dollar varies from time to time; at present it is about 2s. 4d.; but you will be given an allowance to make up one-half of the value of the dollar.
3. It is to be understood that your engagement is for not more than three years, unless it be expressly continued; and that on the satisfactory completion of three years from the date of your arrival in the Colony; you will be granted a free passage back to England. It is also understood that if it is established to the satisfaction of the Governor that you are not qualified for efficient service there, the Governor, subject to the confirmation of the Secretary of State, will have full power to cancel your appointment at any time within the said three years without giving you any further compensation than a passage back to England, which will be granted only if the Governor is satisfied that you have, by your good conduct, deserved it. If previously terminated, the appointment will cease at the end of the said three years.
It is further understood that your services will be at the disposal of the Governor, in the interest of the public service, and that you will be under the orders of the Principal Medical Officer and the Medical Officers in charge of the hospitals of the Colony. You will be liable to be employed wherever the Governor may consider that your presence will be most useful and that you will be available for work as required in the hospitals of the Colony.
It will be necessary for you to express your acceptance of the conditions stated in the 2nd and 3rd paragraphs of this letter before your appointment is confirmed.
